Thank you for inquiring about our residency program in Family Medicine. At Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe we offer our residents an outstanding education in a supportive environment. The extensive resources of the Beaumont system and its university affiliations assure the availability of expertise in every conceivable field. As a result, we individualize the curriculum to meet each of our resident's unique needs.
Family Medicine is the only medical specialty which provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and the family. We integrate the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences and encompass all ages, both genders, each organ system, and every disease entity. Our objective is to provide compassionate, quality care our patients and their families. We do this through services offered at the Family Medicine Center, seeing all our patients receiving care at the Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital, actively participating in community outreach programs and engaging in ongoing research for the enrichment of the knowledge base on which to draw to better care for those who turn to us for their healthcare needs.
Family Medicine Residents fulfill an integral role in patient care at Beaumont. They are given maximum responsibility in accordance with their level of experience with appropriate supervision. Our program is unopposed and offers numerous active staff services which allow residents to learn the role of primary physician first-hand.
Beaumont Physicians' academic instruction is combined with guest lectures to provide residents with education from a multitude of experts. Typical formats include Grand Rounds, basic science conferences, clinical conferences, procedural workshops, morning report, morbidity and mortaility conferences and journal clubs. The Beaumont Hospital System has an active Continuing Medical Education (CME) program certified nationally by the ACCME to give Category I credit. Residents are supported for travel to regional and national meetings to augment their education.
The Family Medicine Residency at Grosse Pointe utilizes national in-service examinations to assist their residents in identifying strengths and areas in need of improvement. Beaumont Family Medicine residents are well-prepared for certification by their specialty board and the vast majority of our graduates achieve certification upon their initial board examination. Our pass rate on the board certification exam is excellent.
One hundred percent of recent graduates have been certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Our graduates have obtained various fellowships and academic positions as well as positions in private practices in urban, suburban and rural settings. Many have remained in the Beaumont system, or southeast Michigan, while other practice throughout the country.
Residents receive a rich, well-balanced experience in both inpatient and outpatient care. They serve as primary care physicians under faculty supervision, for their own patients on very busy inpatient and outpatient services. These services include medical, surgical, pediatric and obstetrical patients from the Beaumont Family Medicine Center. The center is located just a few miles north of the hospital and serves the eastern suburbs of Detroit. The center is spacious with 26 exam rooms, 3 procedure rooms, and an abundance of support staff.
The Beaumont Hospital system is dedicated to the importance of research in advancing medical education. Each resident is provided with the guidance and financial support necessary to complete his or her original research project. The Beaumont Research Institute provides invaluable assistance to residents during their three years of training. Third year residents present their research projects at local and regional research events.
The Family Medicine Residency is able to utilize the resources of a large multi-hospital system while still providing a primarily unopposed residency for its residents.
The Family Medicine, Grosse Pointe residents do rotations such as Obstetrics, Inpatient Pediatrics, Outpatient Pediatrics, Orthopaedics and Emergency Medicine at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak where the larger patient volumes and subspecialists provide an outstanding experience in these areas.
The remainder of the required rotations are done at Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe where the Family Medicine residents enjoy being the only residency based in the hospital. The residents do rotations such as Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonary, General Surgery and Intensive Care at the hospital and are typically the only learners on these rotations.
Many other rotations have the residents working individually in the hospital or at the offices of specialists who are dedicated to providing the residents an excellent education. The Family Medicine Center, where residents see their own patients, is also adjacent to the Grosse Pointe hospital. The larger hospital system also provides access to electives, subspecialists, technologies, and research opportunities that may not be available in other settings.
