The Beaumont Health System Pathology Department offers a comprehensive, fully accredited four-year training program in combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. William Beaumont Hospital's Royal Oak campus, partnered with The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, is a major teaching facility with 1,070 patient beds. We boast 37 accredited residency and fellowship programs with more than 400 residents and fellows caring for our patients. It has one of the highest volumes in the country for annual hospital admissions (56,233), surgeries (47,326), outpatient visits (630,306), and births (5,082). Over 91 medical and surgical specialties are represented on the medical staff. This provides a large volume of diverse material to both our Clinical and Anatomic Pathology laboratories. Surgical specimens approximate 75,000 each year. Cytology specimens approach 87,000, of which 8,072 are obtained from nongynecologic sites. The Clinical Pathology Laboratory handles over 8,000,000 tests annually.
Our residency program is unique in that it has, by design, a small class-size, accepting only 3 new residents each year. However, we have one of the largest volumes of surgical and clinical specimens in the country. The small program size, coupled with our high volume and diversity of cases, provides for a unique approach to resident education. This affords for a more personalized approach with our staff allowing for optimal supervision, attention, and guidance.
The Anatomic Pathology curriculum includes autopsy pathology, general surgical pathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, pediatric and perinatal pathology, molecular pathology, clinical and molecular cytogenetics, electron microscopy, and forensic pathology. The Anatomic Pathology program is strengthened by affiliations with Detroit's Children's Hospital of Michigan and the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.
The Clinical Pathology curriculum includes hematopathology, coagulation, transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, toxicology, analytical cytometry, image analysis, immunology, cytogenetics, molecular pathology, and microbiology (bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, mycobacteriology, virology).
Our Board-certified (primary and sub-specialty), expert faculty includes 20 Anatomic Pathologists, 12 Clinical Pathologists, 7 Ph.D.s and vast array of certified laboratory technologists and scientists all committed to training competent pathologists. As one of the largest and most prestigious educational hospitals in the country, our high patient volume and diversity of cases provides ample and diverse material to develop skill, experience, and efficiency in all areas of laboratory medicine.
